We no longer accept paper checks or money orders. We accept all other forms of payment. Refunds or credit to your account will be handled quickly…usually the same day you let us know. Seed Germination Q & A.
SeedCo Germination Notes: Super Hot Chili Peppers tend to be somewhat difficult to germinate. You can't just throw these seeds in ground and expect them to grow! The utmost care needs to be taken every step of the way. Germination rates at SeedCo are under optimal sterile conditions usually not available to the home gardener and lower germination rates may be observed. SeedCo does not sell second hand seed. All our seed is processed from fresh chili peppers. We start receiving fresh chilies in March and process through Oct.. Our seed is professionally processed inhouse. We require germination test on each variety every 8 weeks. Seed with a germ. rate of less than 87% is discarded. Our average germ. rate under optimal conditions is 94%. We only stock fresh seed. Seed is only kept for one year after processing and discarded. You are guaranteed to receive the freshest seed available.
Q & A
What kind of soil is best? We suggest a sterile brand name water retentive soil. Stay away from soil with high peat content.
What light conditions are best?: The best light is natural. That being said, I do not mean on the window sill. A greenhouse would be the best. If you do not have access to a greenhouse, use a small grow house with fluorescent lights.
How often should I water? Water heavy right after planting the seeds than play it by ear. If the soil looks damp don't water. There are times when we water only once after planting seeds in a 12 day period though this entirely depends on the light conditions and temperature. Over watering will result in contamination with no germination.
What temperature is best for germination? Each variety is different. Generally air temperature should be about 85F with soil about 77F. Note: if soil temperature get too high it will encourage contamination with no germination.
I received a very low or no germination, what happened? First, know it's not the seed. Our seed is tested vigorously for germination. If you receive a low germination, it's most likely due to low temperature and or ever watering. If you received no germination, the most likely cause may be over watering and or high temp. resulting in soil contamination. In both cases guarantee does not apply.
What guarantee do you offer? If your order is damaged in shipping, items will be replaced. Due to conditions beyond our control germination is not guaranteed. Please see low or no germination question above.
How do you recommend planting seeds? I suggest starting seeds in a small container, maybe 4" wide for about 50 seeds. Seeds will emerge in about 10 days. In about 20 days secondary leaves will start to form. At that time transplant to growing trays.
The seed received looks off color? Depending on the variety and deseeding process this is normal and has no baring on germination. If a fermentation process is used seed tends to be darker. Also, the hottest supper hot red varieties may be a little darker.
How is seed processed? Our seed is processed through a proprietary system developed by SeedCo. One of the best features of our system is a feature called "Gyro Floating" of which entirely removes all seed without a live germ insuring an almost 100% live germ rate after processing.
Should I soak the seeds before planting? NO NO and NO again! We have done many tests over the years and soaking seeds does not increase germination. In fact it may actually do the opposite by promoting disease and seed contamination.
I'm a national seed retailer. Do I need to do germination tests? State laws are different and may or may not require regular germination tests. Even if your state does not, we require you do a germination test every 8 weeks starting from the day your seed is received. All guarantees are void if you do not do the required 8 week germination tests. We also do not recommend selling seeds over 2 years old.
How long is SeedCo seed guaranteed? Our seed is guaranteed for 1 year from purchase date. Guaranteed void if contamination issues arise due to soil, water and or temperature.
